Cornerstone Baptist Church was organized into an Independent, Fundamental Baptist Church on May 21, 1990 with 22 charter members. The founding pastor was Dr. Phillip Kopyscinski. Former pastors also include Bro. William Breland (2000-2001), Bro. John Rodgers (2002-2006), and Dr. George Theroux (2006-2024).
In July 2024, the 34th year since its founding and Dr. Theroux’s 18th year as its pastor, Cornerstone voted to accept Dr. George Theroux’s retirement and selected (then assistant pastor) Dr. Terry LeQuieu as the 5th pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Dr. George Theroux will continue ministering through evangelism being sent out of Cornerstone, and will be home based in McAlester participating and serving in the ministries of Cornerstone when he is not traveling and preaching out.
Cornerstone’s name originated from the Scriptures, Epehsians 2:19-22 which says, “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chielf corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” We believe that the church must be built upon Jesus Christ, who is our chief cornerstone. Without a cornerstone the building will fall, and without Jesus the church will fail.
