Stewardship: The Tithe

“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse,” – Malachi 3:10

What is a steward?

I Corinthians 4:2

The word tithe means ‘ten percent.’ The Word of God gives a clear command about tithing here in Malachi. Tithing is the only command in which we are told to do it and prove God’s Word. Let’s look at tithing a little closer…

The Principle of Tithing

Abraham commenced it Genesis 14:18-20
Jacob continued it Genesis 28:20-22
Moses confirmed it Leviticus 27:30
God commanded it Malachi 3:10
Jesus commended it Matthew 23:23
Paul commissioned it I Corinthians 9:14
The church conformed it I Corinthians 16:2

Practical Questions about Tithing

Where should I give my tithe? Leviticus 27:30; Mark 12:41-44; Malachi 3:10

We tithe to the local New Testament church that we are a member of.

I Corinthians 16:2

How should I figure my tithe?

Proverbs 3:9

The tithe should be one-tenth of your increase. The Bible teaches Gross income tithing— this means that you tithe off of what you make before taxes.

Should a man in debt try to tithe? Mark 12:42-44; Romans 13:8; Proverbs 6:1-2

Yes! How will he ever pay his debt except God give him the health, strength, intelligence, and opportunity to make money? One must not use God’s money to pay his own debts. You wouldn’t steal from your neighbor to pay a bill, so why would you steal from God?

Should I save my tithe for special offerings in the church? Numbers 18:21,24,26-28; Nehemiah 10:38

Should you rob Peter to pay Paul? Absolutely not! Special offerings are given over and above our tithe. If God’s storehouse is my church, then only my church has a right to designate what my tithe should be given to.

When should I give my tithe? Proverbs 3:9; I Corinthians 16:2

As soon as possible. The early church gave their tithes on the first day of the week, which is Sunday.

What will tithing do for me? Nehemiah 10:37-39, 12:27; II Chronicles 29:3-11, 31:5-10

It helps you express your love for God. It gives you joy to know that you are honest with God. It demonstrates your faith in God. It teaches your children that God comes first and that He is real to you. It keeps Satan from destroying your family.
